Birth of Rotary - A brief History
The ideals of Rotary started in Chicago in 1905 when a young lawyer Paul Harris invited three friends to join him for lunch to discuss a new sort of Club, which would "band together for social purposes and to be of material help to one another". This small gathering became ROTARY and adopted the symbol of the wagon wheel with 13 spokes, the basis of today's roundel. He is still remembered by the Paul Harris awards for exceptional achievement. The idea spread rapidly reaching Newcastle in 1915. Our area's senior club, now known as Newcastle upon Tyne have celebrated their centenary and we look forward to our own in Blyth in 2024.
